Let Me Sea
Our last day on the Ligurian coast, Ashley and I hopped back on a train to Santa Margherita. It is a relatively larger town near Portofino and a beautiful area to explore. We started the day with breakfast at a cute cafe, then just began wandering aimlessly with no real plan or destination, which can sometimes lead to wonderful discoveries. While waiting for the ferry the day before we had loved how cute the place is and wanted to see more. We walked through main streets and down back alleys, eventually seeing a sign to the Villa Durazzo, a name I recognized from some of the research I'd done beforehand on the region. We climbed up a steep path through a wooded park and exited into the courtyard of the villa, which was paved in a beautiful black and white pattern made of small stones. We milled around the villa for a little bit and enjoyed the views overlooking the sea, then we slowly headed back down. The day was sweltering hot and we were truly feeling miserable, so after taking a look at the marina area and the lines and lines of boats, we searched for a place to have lunch. We found the delicious "Il Patio" Ristorante and after a fresh meal made our way to the beach, where we spent the rest of the afternoon sprawled under umbrellas until it was time to catch a train first to pick up our bags in Chiavari, then back to Florence and Ashley's flat. The coast had been a truly stunning respite for a few days, but the Europe adventures were winding to a regretful close...
