Union Square Greenmarket

One of the main things I've done since moving to New York City is eat, and boy do I really mean eat. I love dining out, I love ordering delivery, I love cooking, I just really love food okay? So I've decided to start a weekly post about food, one of my true passions in life.

I recently moved to Union Square for the summer to an NYU dorm called Carlyle, the entrance of which walks right out onto the west side of the square, AKA the location of the Union Square Greenmarket, a delightful cacophony of local vendors selling fresh goods. Walking through it every morning on the way to work is so tempting, though I've been deterred by the fact that I always seem to be running late and don't have time to stop.

This past Friday, the Greenmarket held A Summer Night with Greenmarket Chefs, which was a lovely way to try some of the dishes that can be made from the farmers market ingredients. I had a yummy mushroom salad, made of fresh arugula, several types of mushrooms, hazelnuts for some crunch, shaved parmesan, and a light summery vinaigrette. I devoured it as I walked through the vendors. Next, I had smoked ricotta on toast with garlic scape pesto -- it was incredibly delicious, the toasted bread cut thickly to hold a huge heaping of smoked ricotta and garlic pesto and some thinly sliced radish. This also didn't last long and was soon gobbled up. It was great to see so many people out and about enjoying the summer and brought together by food.
