The Best Instagram Spots in Split, Croatia

Croatia is such a beautiful country, known for its crystal clear blue waters and miles of nearly pristine coastline. I lived for a month in Split, in the south of Croatia. During that time I explored as much as possible and snapped as many photos as possible, trying to capture the beauty of what was around me. If you get the chance to visit, you’ll surely want to do the same. Here are some of my favorite places that I discovered through my travels in the city and surrounding areas.

Diocletian’s Palace

The main area to explore in Split, you’ll want to spend most of your time in or around Diocletian’s Palace.

Some spots to check out:

  • Triklinij (behind the Ethnographic Museum) — an interesting view looking back at the cathedral tower, the main recognizable landmark of Split’s old town area

  • Corner of Poljana Grgura Ninskog and Poljana Kraljice Jelene — view of the cathedral tower with street light in foreground

  • Voćni Trg — a cute little square right off the Riva

Cornaro Rooftop Bar

My favorite viewpoint overlooking all of Split. You should head up here for sunset to grab a cocktail and snap some panoramic images of the gorgeous city below.

The Port

A really gorgeous view looking over the water to Split’s old town. This is the view on many of the postcards and stock images of Split and makes a lovely iconic image any time of day.

Riva

The Riva is a seaside promenade that was added by the French during Napolean’s rule of the town. It’s the main bustling heart of the city, with lines of shops and restaurants along the waterfront on the reclaimed land in front of Diocletian’s palace.

Žnjan Beach

This isn’t the most touristy area, but it’s actually where I lived while I was in Split. It’s a nice beach with several cool beach bars along the water, my favorite of which was Taboo. It’s an easy Uber ride or leisurely walk from old town Split.

Jadran Beach

You will realize that “beach” in Croatian doesn’t necessarily mean sand or rocks, but also manmade concrete outcroppings like Jadran Beach. It’s essentially a pier of sorts with lounge chairs and a beach bar. While the Floridian in me resists classifying it as a beach, it’s a really nice spot to catch a sunset.

The Islands: Hvar and Vis

Okay, I’m including the islands on the list because they're only a short ferry ride away and where I got some of my favorite photos of the trip.

Some of the best photo spots in Hvar include:

  • Spanish Fortress

  • Hvar Town Waterfront

  • Adriana Rooftop Bar — I grabbed a couple drinks here before hiking up to the fortress and enjoyed the nice aerial perspective.

  • Club Park Restaurant and Bar

  • View of the Franciscan Monastery along Šetalište put Križa

  • View above the city at approximately 36 S. Buzolić Tome — I stumbled upon this spot through some aimless wandering through the narrow and steep streets above the ferry.

  • Carpe Diem Beach Bar — A super popular spot for a beach day spent by those infamous sparkling turquoise waters is Carpe Diem.

Some of the best photo spots on Vis include:

  • Along the Komiža waterfront, including the end of the breaker where boats dock and along Ribarska ul and Trup ul. (see map)

  • The beach at Stončica — you’ll probably need to take a boat to reach this spot. We stopped here during a day boat tour. It’s a really nice secluded beach that has some stunning views inside the protected harbor.
